Liu and Lay crowned in Christchurch – ITTF-Oceania

Teng Teng Liu and Jian Fang Lay have come away crowned champions at the ITTF-Oceania Tour | New Zealand, staged in Christchurch from the 10-11 November. Both finals saw grudge matches between Oceania rivals Australia and New Zealand, with the countries sharing the spoils. Tahiti defends home turf – ITTF-Oceania

Tahiti’s Ocean Belrose and Melveen Richmond have maintained local pride as they took the Men’s and Women’s Singles titles respectively at the 2018 ITTF-Oceania Tour | Tahiti, which was held in Papeete from the 3-4 November. Led by coach George Logothetis and assisted by local expert Cathy Gauthier, thirty one athletes recently took part in a nine day advance training camp in Noumea, New Caledonia. The group was composed of diverse array of table tennis players, with cadets, juniors, seniors and para athletes joining the camp. More than sixty hours was spent out on the courts during the camp. The focus was primarily  directed towards footwork, with particular emphasis on recovering from short and long balls. “They were all very enthusiastic and dedicated,” says camp conductor
 
Nathan Xu paired up with Team Europe’s Elena Zaharia to claim the silver in the Mixed Doubles at the 2018 ITTF World Cadet Challenge on Wednesday 31st October in Tottori, Japan. Jian Fang Lay’s crazy run at the 2018 ITTF Women’s World Cup came to an end yesterday in Chengdu, China. But it wasn’t without a fight. The Australian representative went down in the last 16 to World No.12 Suh Hyowon (KOR) in a seven game thriller, losing out 4-3 (11-6, 11-4, -11, 11-4, 6-11, 9-11, 11-6). Seventh place for Oceania in Tottori – ITTF-Oceania

Team Oceania has secured seventh place at the expense of Africa in both the Girls’ and Boys’ Team Events at the 2018 ITTF World Cadet Challenge in Tottori. As ITTF-Oceania continues to add events to its calendar, the need for a larger pool of umpires also grows. Developing officials alongside major events is quickly becoming a trend to help bolster the support for these tournaments. Recently, two Basic Certified Umpire (BCU) Courses have been run alongside key events, leading to new additions to the pool of Oceania umpires. More than 100 of world’s best juniors will compete for titles in teams and individual events, as the World Junior Championships comes to Oceania for the very first time. ITTF-Oceania are seeking nominations for the position of Team Oceania Girls’ Coach. The coaching position is for the 2018 ITTF World Cadet Challenge, which will take place in Tottori, Japan from 23-31 October 2018. It is required that nominees are available for preparation camps which are to take place in Melbourne and then Tokyo between 12-21 October. Team Oceania Coaches will receive full travel and hospitality costs, as well as an indemnity of $1,500AU for the trip.

Dear Friends, We’re fast approaching the mid-point of the 2017-2020 Strategic Plan  and this is an opportune time to reflect on the progress made since the plan’s inception, and provide an update on the direction of ITTF-Oceania. It’s been a year and a half since I took on the role of Executive Director of ITTF-Oceania and what a year and half! Some of the highlights include:
 
ITTF-Oceania has begun pilot-testing the brand new DNA Program (Developing National Associations Program) in Tonga with the hope of creating self sustaining National Associations throughout the continent. This comes following ITTF-Oceania Executive Director Christian Holtz conducting a two day strategic planning workshop with the Tonga Table Tennis Federation from the 16th-17th August. The program will see ITTF-Oceania partner with National Associations and invest in their capacity and enhance their governance to facilitate their strategic objectives.
